On this day in ..

    • 1894 - "Election Day Snowstorm" in Connecticut. Southern New England is hit by a blizzard with 10-12 inches of snow in Connecticut and winds over 60 mph in Rhode Island.
    • 1961 - Dry Santa Ana winds spread fires in the Bel Air / Brentwood area of southern California destroying a large number of homes. Burbank reports a relative humidity of 3%.
    • 1987 - Flash floods strand 8000 people in Death Valley National park in southern California as over an inch of rain fell. The average annual rainfall at the National Park is just over 2 inches. Many roads were washed out.
    • 1988 - Powerful storm causes high winds and heavy snow across parts of the eastern US. Wind gust of 64 mph in Knoxville, TN and 80 mph and Pleasant Valley, VT.
    • 1991 - Early Eastern cold snap as low temperatures reach 8 at Elkins, West Virginia. 11 at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania was their coldest reading ever for so early in the season. 17 at Jackson, Kentucky was a record for the date.
    • 1998 - Rejuvenated Tropical Storm Mitch, a mere shadow of its former killer self, made landfall near Naples FL with top winds of 65 mph. Five tornadoes were spawned by Mitch in South Florida: two in the Florida Keys, one each in Broward, Palm Beach, and Collier Counties. The most significant of these (F2)
