CADIZ, Ohio -- Harrison County Sheriff Mark Miller was going to be on the November ballot for re-election, but on Tuesday announced to 7News he was not going to enter the race.

Sheriff Mark Miller joined the force at the age of 18 and after some sole searching, he said he's hanging up his hat. The Sheriff said he might do something else, but is not sure what that will be.

Miller will continue his role as Sheriff in Ohio until a newly elected one takes office in January.

Miller said, “I think the biggest thing now is the budget. We've been cut a lot here. I was forced to shut the jail down, because of no money. That's going to be the main thing.”

“Another budget problem is gas. We're spending about $4,000 a month now. I'm trying to cut that down, but I don't see how.” Miller added.

The Democratic Party must choose someone to run against Republican Challenger Scott Christian in November.

7News learned Cadiz Police Chief Brian Dowdle and longtime Sheriff Deputy Joe Myers are interested.

A decision is expected soon.
