ST. CLAIRSVILLE, Ohio -- It was a simple traffic stop at 1:13 a.m.
But it quickly turned complicated.
Authorities say 56-year-old Gordon Irwin of Wegee Lane, Shadyside, was driving on Mead Township Road 501, not far from State Route 7.
When they tried to pull him over, he hit the gas and took off.
"After a short pursuit, he crashed and was partially maced and fled on foot," said Sgt. Don Britton of the Ohio Highway Patrol. "He was apprehended a short time later. He's now facing a DUI charge--the second offense within six years--plus driving under suspension, failure to control and fleeing and eluding."
He was pursued by the Ohio Higway Patrol, the Belmont County Sheriff's Department, and Powhatan and Shadyside Police.
Sgt. Britton says the car chase was brief.
Irwin only drove six-tenths of a mile before he crashed.
And the foot pursuit after that was reportedly also brief.
The sergeant says people who flee from a traffic stop generally only cause more trouble for themselves.
Irwin is lodged in the Belmont County Jail. .
