The two sides have no new talks scheduled.
SHADYSIDE, Ohio -- Shadyside Education Association officials said they are deeply disappointed that the Shadyside Board of Education distorted an SEA proposal that would have saved the taxpayers $225,000 a year through modifications in the teachers’ salary schedule, using it in a way that would have given teachers very little.
“The SEA has continuously worked to address the needs of the board," SEA Chief Negotiator Jeff Mamone said. "It is deplorable that the board’s latest proposal would give teachers, who have taken zero percent increases in their base salaries for the past five years, less than a cost of living raise.
"Superintendent Brinker’s announcement that teachers were offered a 1.6 percent raise the first year and a 2 percent raise the second year is extremely misleading. The Board has proposed changes in the teachers’ salary schedule that would negate most of their proposed raise. I found it completely unacceptable to find that one of our teachers would only receive a raise of $9 this year and that amount is before taxes.
“Our hopes of reaching a settlement yesterday were dashed by what we saw as the Board’s refusal to bargain fairly," SEA President Linda Tomer said. "Now we must prepare for a strike, which will be set to occur on Nov. 13, 2009. Once again we ask the Shadyside school community to contact board members and insist that they return to the table and negotiate a fair and equitable contract with teachers that will make this strike unnecessary.”
The Shadyside Education Association represents 57 certified/licensed education professionals serving students in the Shadyside Local Schools.
Thursday afternoon, 7 News attempted to reach someone from the Board of Education for a comment but their spokesman was in a meeting.
