Shadyside Teachers Prepare to Strike Nov. 13

The two sides have no new talks scheduled.

SHADYSIDE, Ohio -- Shadyside Education Association officials said they are deeply disappointed that the Shadyside Board of Education distorted an SEA proposal that would have saved the taxpayers $225,000 a year through modifications in the teachers’ salary schedule, using it in a way that would have given teachers very little.

“The SEA has continuously worked to address the needs of the board," SEA Chief Negotiator Jeff Mamone said. "It is deplorable that the board’s latest proposal would give teachers, who have taken zero percent increases in their base salaries for the past five years, less than a cost of living raise.

"Superintendent Brinker’s announcement that teachers were offered a 1.6 percent raise the first year and a 2 percent raise the second year is extremely misleading. The Board has proposed changes in the teachers’ salary schedule that would negate most of their proposed raise. I found it completely unacceptable to find that one of our teachers would only receive a raise of $9 this year and that amount is before taxes.

“Our hopes of reaching a settlement yesterday were dashed by what we saw as the Board’s refusal to bargain fairly," SEA President Linda Tomer said. "Now we must prepare for a strike, which will be set to occur on Nov. 13, 2009. Once again we ask the Shadyside school community to contact board members and insist that they return to the table and negotiate a fair and equitable contract with teachers that will make this strike unnecessary.”

The Shadyside Education Association represents 57 certified/licensed education professionals serving students in the Shadyside Local Schools.

Thursday afternoon, 7 News attempted to reach someone from the Board of Education for a comment but their spokesman was in a meeting.

Dear teacher supporter:

You suggested I didn't understand the salary structure. My dear / sir, those were rhetorical questions.

Yes, I know they get raises from BS to MS, and more for more credits, even if it doesn't raise test scores in the classroom.

It doesn't matter what it costs. If there is not payback, they shouldn't do it. It must return more than is costs, else teachers who have no need to get nor apply a masters wouldn't do it.

Yes, it appears they/you are clueless to what is happening around them.

The teachers of the Shadyside School District should be ashamed to walk the halls of the schools that they teach in. To hold the students of the school district in ransom( which in essence is what they are doing) over a 1.4% increase in wage is despicable. I thought that you teachers were at the school because you guys wanted to help the children of the Shadyside School District. Where did my thinking go wrong. What you are saying to the community is that you are there to make a better buck. Shame on you. What type of mesage does that send to the children you are supposed to be teaching. Your GREED is the exact reason that so many other industries and business have left the Valley. If you want the Westerville salary then go live in Westerville. Personally, I hope you do strike, and the school closes( what a great loss to the community that would be, tragic even). But then my children would no longer be able to be used like a TOOL. GROW UP TEACHERS, ACCEPT THE FACT THAT YOU TEACH IN SHADYSIDE, AND BE HAPPY THAT YOU CAN PUT DINNER ON THE TABLE FOR YOUR FAMILY, BECAUSE SOMEDAY SOON YOU MAY NOT!!!

Don't let these teachers fool you they have gotten "step up" raises for the past 3 years. These teachers should be ashamed. I hope they tell them to hit the road. Here is the real scoop.... The teachers that are pushing for these big increases are the ones who are close to retirement. They are doing this because their retirement plans are basedon the amount of money they earned in their last fewworking years. So they are trying to bump thier salaries so they can reap the benefits. This is a very greedy position. From what I hear about 40% of the teachers are willing to cross picket lines. Most are not even in favor of this contract points.

If it was really about the kids and the community, the teachers would accept the generous raise they were offered and not try to bleed the community dry. They should be ashamed of themselves. Shadyside cannot afford this type of teacher. BTW, Shadyside is only rated "Effective" by the state. Can't we get better teachers than that.

Everyone is having more costs these days. I myself work two full time jobs so that i can make ends meet that is 4160 hrs a year and I am just happy to have my jobs and know that I can pay my bills. Now a teacher works aprox 1680 hours a year with summers and weekends off but yet your still complaining. I hope that you selfish teachers do win get what you want and then by next school year Shadyside Schools will be no more. Teachers for once you need think about your students and the long term consequence it will have on your paychecks when you are standing in the line for unemployement. If you want a big city income move to the big city! We won't miss you! Bring in the subs and let them strike! Bellaire get ready for a skyrocket of open enrollment or better yet the whole school when the consolidation happens!! Good luck Mr. Brinker and Shadyside Board you guys have your hands full.

Hey folks, it's about the Kids and Community. Get off your dead behinds and contact your board members and demand they get back to the table. The teachers aren't asking for that much. Everywhere in America people are paying more, going without, and are being cut back. It's been going on for years now. These teachers are no different, except they froze their salaries for a few years, were place back on the old pay scale that existed before they froze their salaries, which translates into very little increase, are paying more for dental, hospitalization, and RX like many if not all of us, but their doing it on the same amount of money. You want to keep your school district in place? Look around at the number of schools that have consolidated - they communities are dead - nothing to offer the people except decay. Call these board members - Campbell, Bittingle, Falbo, Hart, Gardner and tell them to get back to the table. Give them what they want. This community has been told for years that doom and gloom were going to come. Somehow, we'll survive. Talk it out and get it done. If you have to make cuts, make them later. Doom and gloom may never happen. Would you rather have a strike and have subs from Cleveland and God knows where else coming into these buildings to babysit your kids because that is exactly what they're going to do. They aren't going to teach your kids this is just a way to keep the schools open and for what???!!! What kind of education is really going to get done. Perhaps parents need to storm the building - if not in support of the teachers, do it for the kids - is anyone really thinking about them!!! Board members have an obligation not just to voters but to the kids as well. Isn't that why they ran for these positions. So if this district falls apart who are you going to blame - the board - the teachers. How about yourselves. Do it for the kids - call these board members and the superintendent's office and everyone show up to get this over with - you, the taxpayer!!!

Sally how can you comment when you are not intelligent enough to understand how the salary structure works. I guess I should give you credit for understanding that 57 times 2 equals 114. Yes they do get pay raises for going from a Bachelors to a Masters degree but do you have any idea how much it costs to get a masters degree. Sally I doubt if you have any clue.

It is completely unacceptable that in this economy where many people are jobless and others taking cut in pay that they even have the nerve to ask for a raise. Are they clueless to what is happening around them?

What does that zero percent base mean? Don't they still get increases for getting more education? Where else can you work where there is no money for merit raises but you can still get them other ways?

Grow up!

There are 114 subs waiting to take the 57 positions.
