World AIDS Day provides governments, national AIDS programs, organizations, and individuals with an opportunity to raise awareness and focus attention on the global AIDS epidemic.

WHEELING -- Dec. 1 is globally recognized as World AIDS Day.
It was established by the World Health Organization in 1988.
Wheeling Jesuit University will mark this day with a memorial service on Dec. 1 to honor victims of the disease.
It will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the McDonough Center's Performance Gym.
The service will include the unfolding of the AIDS Memorial Quilt and stories from Wheeling Jesuit speakers and other community speakers.
In 2007, the estimated number of persons living with HIV world wide was 33.2 million.
