WHEELING -- Detroit Tigers manager Jim Leyland will be the special guest at the Ohio Valley Baseball Coaches Clinic at Wheeling Park High School on Sunday, Jan.31.

Leyland, along with good friend and longtime big league coach Rich Donnelly are the clinicians, as well as Wheeling Jesuit head coach Terry Edwards.

The camp was organized by Wheeling resident Doug Costain.

"It's a chance for area coaches, especially recreation league coaches, to learn from the pros," said Costain.

Other area coaches assisting in the clinic are former Wheeling Park coach Mark Dellbrugge, former Wheeling American Legion coach Doug Tush and former Ohio Valley College assistant coach John Rush.

The clinic runs from 1-5 p.m. and costs $40 per person. The price goes to $50 the day of the clinic.

For college and high school staffs (up to 4) the costs is $120. Rec. league coaches (up to 5) is $100. An extra fee is charged if you come on the day of the clinic.

The clinic is sponsored by Bordas & Bordas, PLLC, Gold Khourey & Turak, and the Ohio County Commissioners.

Leyland will bring a wealth of knowledge to the clinic. He coached the Florida Marlins to the World Series title in 1997 and was the 2006 American League Manager of the Year, when his Tigers defeated the New York Yankees to win the pennant.

Donnelly, who was born and raised in Steubenville, Ohio has more than 25 years of Major League Baseball coaching experience and was a member of Leyland's Marlins staff in '97. Donnelly was an assistant coach for the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 90's and returned in 2009.

Edwards is in his fourth season as the Head Coach at Wheeling Jesuit University and is well-respected with over 30 years of experience in the high school and college ranks.

Edwards is in his fourth season as the Head Coach at Wheeling Jesuit University and is well-respected with over 30 years of experience in the high school and college ranks.

I had a good laugh when I read the above sentence in the article.

Edwards well-respected? By who? He has to be the worst baseball coach I have ever watched in action. A college coach? Get serious. He ruins every pitching arm on his team. Has no idea what's so ever how to manage a pitching staff.

And his son? Shouldn't even be coaching. Ripping the team apart with his callous and rude remarks and attitude with the players he doesn't like. Like a bully in high school and he must be 26 yrs. old or so.

Nice job Edwards, keeping your son on the staff. Graduate degrees are expensive at another school, aren't they. Despicable!

The smart players transferred out already.

WJU baseball is a joke! With the pitching staff they've had for the past 4 years, Coco the gorilla could have coached the team to a .500 record.
